To prevent Mosquito bites – and help for when you have them!

Make a spray with diluted essential oils

100 mls water with 50 drops of essential oils:

Catnip oil, cinnamon leaf oil, citronella, lemongrass and peppermint are all good. Choose three.

Wear long trousers at dawn and dusk as these are the times mosquitoes tend to be out and about. Put citronella oil round the hem of your trousers.  Use the spray on your arms and round your neck. If you find it stings your skin, dilute with more water.

This works equally well with the chemical products for sale and are more pleasant to use.

  • If you have been bitten , try:

Aloe vera, Calendula, Chamomile tea applied to skin, Cucumbers reduce swelling, Cinnamon oil because it is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, Tea tree oil and Lavender essential oil.

Also apply an ice cube to a bite.

Lemon and Lime are anti-itch and anti-bacterial; but avoid putting on skin when exposed to sunshine.

Peppermint essential oil is cooling and helpful for itch. Put a drop in a saucer with a little water and dab bite with cotton wool dipped in saucer.

  • If you are covered in bites: try soaking in a bath of warm water with 2-3 cups of apple cider vinegar added to it. The acidity will stop the maddening itch.

Alternatively, dissolve some baking soda in a bath and soak for 30 mts.
